The First-Time Voter

You stand with your family in the village center as an official moves through the crowds, writing names into a large book. He asks for each person individually. When he reaches you, family members answer in your place. He hesitates; he needs your name, your own, not anyone else's. Do you offer it? In this new nation of individuals, will you claim your place as one?

The official looks up from his register. “I must have her name,” he says. Someone answers for you: “She is the wife of Ayush.”

Give your name.

Choice 1:

Allow your household to continue speaking on your behalf.
Allow the official to move on.
